Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia’s loyalty program and Australia’s second-largest airline miles scheme. While Qantas Frequent Flyer dominates domestic mindshare, Velocity quietly delivers some of the best value redemptions available to Australian frequent flyers — particularly for long-haul international travel in premium cabins.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Velocity in 2026: how to earn points, the most valuable ways to redeem them, the status tier system, partner airline opportunities, and which credit cards supercharge your balance fastest.
Program Overview
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Program name | Velocity Frequent Flyer |
| Operator | Virgin Australia |
| Alliance | None (independent) |
| Points currency | Velocity Points |
| Points expiry | 24 months from last earning or redemption activity |
| Status tiers | Red (base) / Silver / Gold / Platinum |
| Members (approx.) | 12 million+ |
Velocity is an independent program — Virgin Australia is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or oneworld. This is actually an advantage: Velocity has cherry-picked individual airline partnerships, allowing members to earn and redeem on carriers across all three alliances.
Earning Velocity Points
Flying with Virgin Australia
On Virgin Australia flights, you earn Velocity Points based on the fare class and sector distance — not a flat rate. Higher booking classes earn more per kilometre flown.
As a guide, Economy saver fares typically earn around 5 points per kilometre, while full-fare Economy and Business earn significantly more. Status members receive a multiplier on top of base earn.
Always check the current earning table at velocityfrequentflyer.com before booking — Virgin Australia adjusts earn rates periodically and the exact rate depends on your fare class.
Partner Airlines
This is where Velocity gets interesting. You can earn on a broad set of international carriers:
- Singapore Airlines / SilkAir / Scoot — one of Velocity’s most valuable partnerships; earn on SIA metal and redeem for SIA award space (more on this below)
- Etihad Airways — earn on EY metal across its global network
- Virgin Atlantic — transatlantic flights
- Air New Zealand — trans-Tasman and Pacific routes
- HawaiianMiles interline — Hawaii routes
- Delta Sky Miles — limited earn on select codeshare routes
The SIA partnership deserves special attention. You can transfer Velocity Points to KrisFlyer at a 1.35:1 ratio (1,350 Velocity Points = 1,000 KrisFlyer miles). For experienced points players, this opens access to SIA’s award inventory — including Singapore Suites redemptions that are nearly impossible to access via other currencies.

Credit Cards
Credit cards are the fastest way to accumulate Velocity Points without flying. The key cards to know:
Virgin Money cards (direct earn):
- Velocity High Flyer Card — earns Velocity Points directly; comes with two Virgin Australia lounge passes per year and a complimentary return domestic flight on first spend milestone
- Virgin Money Flyer Card — entry-level direct earn
Transfer partner cards (earn bank points, transfer to Velocity):
- Amex Membership Rewards cards — Amex Platinum, Amex Explorer, Amex Gold; transfer at varying ratios to Velocity
- NAB Rewards cards — transfer to Velocity at 1:1
- Westpac Altitude — transfer to Velocity (check current ratio)
- ANZ Reward Points — transferable to Velocity
OzFlyer Tip: The most powerful setup for Velocity accumulation is pairing an Amex card (for high earn on everyday spend) with a Visa/Mastercard for merchants that don’t accept Amex. Both feeding into a single Velocity account compounds quickly.
Non-card Partners
Velocity has an extensive non-card earn ecosystem:
- Everyday Rewards (Woolworths) — link your Everyday Rewards card; earn Velocity Points on grocery spend
- Virgin Australia Hotels — earn when booking accommodation through the VA portal
- Velocity Wine — earn on wine purchases
- Car hire — Europcar, Avis, Budget, Hertz partnerships
- Selected dining and retail — via the Velocity Dining program
Status Tiers
| Tier | Qualification (status credits/year) | Key Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Base (no requirement) | Earn + redeem; 7kg carry-on |
| Silver | 200 status credits | Priority check-in; 7+7kg carry-on; lounge access on Business fares |
| Gold | 500 status credits | Complimentary domestic lounge access; 7+14kg carry-on; Economy+ seats |
| Platinum | 1,000 status credits | Unlimited domestic lounge access; reciprocal lounge on SIA / EY; highest earn multiplier |
Status credits are earned based on fare class and route — not the same as Velocity Points. A cheap sale fare earns fewer status credits. Business class and full-fare Economy earn the most.
For domestic-heavy travellers, Silver status is achievable with roughly 10–12 Melbourne–Sydney or Brisbane–Sydney return trips per year in Economy (fare class dependent). Gold requires a more significant commitment or a mix of domestic plus some international.
Redeeming Velocity Points: The Sweet Spots
Domestic Reward Flights
Virgin Australia domestic reward seats are available on the Velocity booking engine. Sydney–Melbourne, Brisbane–Sydney, and Perth–Sydney are the most available routes. Economy reward seats start from around 7,800 points one-way plus taxes; Business starts from around 18,000 points.
For short haul domestic hops, the value is solid but not spectacular — you’ll get around 0.7–1.0 cent per point on domestic.
The Trans-Tasman & Pacific
Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane–Auckland in Business is where Velocity can deliver above-average value. Redemption rates on these routes (when available) can represent over 1.5 cents per point when compared to cash fares.
International via Partner Airlines: The Real Value
This is where Velocity separates itself from pure domestic programs.
Etihad Business and First: Velocity has a direct redemption partnership with Etihad. Etihad’s Business Studio and First Apartments rank among the best in the world. Sydney–Abu Dhabi in Business can be redeemed using Velocity Points when EY award space is open. Etihad’s award search is available directly on the Velocity website.
Singapore Airlines via Points Transfer: While there’s no direct Velocity-to-SIA redemption, you can transfer Velocity Points to KrisFlyer (1,350 Velocity → 1,000 KrisFlyer). Singapore Airlines’ Saver awards for SYD–SIN in Business or First represent outstanding value for KrisFlyer miles. The transfer takes 2–5 business days. Factor this in when booking around a specific travel date.

Points + Pay (Mixed Redemption)
Velocity allows combining points with cash for awards. This reduces the points threshold but typically delivers worse cents-per-point value than pure award redemptions. Best used when you’re short on points for a specific flight.
Upgrades
Velocity Points can also be used for cabin upgrades on eligible Virgin Australia fares. The points required vary by route and cabin. For domestic upgrades to Business Class, this is often solid value if you’re already flying and have surplus points.
Points Expiry: The Key Rule
Velocity Points expire after 24 months of account inactivity. Inactivity means no earning and no redemption. This is one of the more generous expiry policies among Australian programs (Qantas miles expire after 18 months of inactivity).
To keep your account active cheaply:
- Link to Everyday Rewards and do your regular Woolworths grocery shop — this automatically earns a small number of Velocity Points every few weeks
- A small hotel or car hire booking through a partner resets the clock
How Velocity Compares to Qantas Frequent Flyer
| Factor | Velocity | Qantas FF |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic network | Strong (all VA routes) | Larger (Qantas + Jetstar) |
| International partners | Etihad, SIA, VA, EY | OneWorld alliance + non-OneWorld |
| Credit card earn ecosystem | Smaller | Larger |
| Points expiry | 24 months inactivity | 18 months inactivity |
| Transfer out | KrisFlyer (1.35:1) | Limited |
| Best sweet spot | Etihad First / Business; SIA via transfer | OneWorld partners; QF itself |
The most effective Australian frequent flyer strategy is often dual-program — use Velocity for VA flying and Etihad redemptions, and use Qantas FF for QF/oneworld redemptions. Many top Australian points earners operate both.
Velocity in 2026: What’s Changed
Virgin Australia emerged from administration in 2020 and relaunched with a leaner domestic focus. The Velocity program has been progressively rebuilding its partner ecosystem. Key developments relevant to 2026:
- The Everyday Rewards partnership has been deepened, with improved bonus point promotions
- Velocity has maintained its Etihad direct redemption option through the partnership
- Status credit earn on Scoot (SIA’s budget carrier) provides a cheaper path to building Velocity status for trans-Asian routes
For the most current program news, check The Australian Frequent Flyer and Point Hacks — both cover Velocity changes in detail as they happen.
Who Should Prioritise Velocity?
Velocity suits you if:
- You fly Virgin Australia domestically (especially Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast focus)
- You want to access Etihad Business/First without a credit card directly earning EY miles
- You hold Amex cards and want a second redemption option alongside Qantas FF
- You value longer points expiry (24 months vs 18 months for QF)
- You fly trans-Tasman or to Pacific island destinations
Stick with Qantas FF primarily if:
- Your employer books Qantas by default and you’re building status on QF metal
- You want the deepest domestic coverage (Jetstar + QF)
- You need broad oneworld partner redemptions (AA, BA, Cathay, JAL, Iberia)
