If you’ve booked a long-haul award ticket to or through Australia, there’s a good chance you have a stopover window. Qantas and Velocity both allow free or low-cost stopovers on international award bookings. A 72-hour stopover in Sydney or Melbourne turns a transit slog into a mini-holiday — if you know how to use the time.
This guide covers what to do with 3 days in each city, how to handle the airport-to-city logistics, and which day tours are worth booking via Klook, GetYourGuide, or Viator.
Sydney: 72-Hour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival + Harbour Icons
Morning — Arrive at SYD
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is only 8km from the CBD. Three options:
Drop bags at your hotel. If you booked on points: the Park Hyatt Sydney (Category 8, 35,000–45,000 World of Hyatt points) sits directly under the Harbour Bridge with Opera House views. For Marriott points: Pier One Sydney Harbour (Marriott Bonvoy, 50,000–70,000 points). For budget: the Holiday Inn Potts Point (IHG, 20,000–30,000 points) is a solid redemption with easy train access from the airport.
Afternoon — Circular Quay
Walk from your hotel to Circular Quay via the Royal Botanic Garden. Stop at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair — it’s the only spot in Sydney where the Bridge and Opera House sit in a single frame. Then take the official Opera House tour (1 hour, AU$43). Book ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide; same-day slots sell out in peak season.
Evening — Opera Bar
Sunset drinks at Opera Bar. A schooner of local craft beer is AU$10–12. You’re paying for the view, and it’s worth it. Dinner in The Rocks — Quay (fine dining, AU$200+ per head) if you’re celebrating. The Glenmore rooftop (AU$25–35 mains) if you want a more casual pub meal with Bridge views.
Day 2: Coastal Sydney
Morning — Bondi to Coogee Walk
Train to Bondi Junction + bus 333 to Bondi Beach. Walk the 6km coastal path to Coogee (~2.5 hours at a relaxed pace). Swim at Bronte Baths (free ocean pool) along the way. Stop at one of the cafes in Bronte or Clovelly for brunch.
Afternoon — Ferry to Manly
Bus back to Bondi Junction, train to Circular Quay, catch the F1 Manly Ferry (~30 min). Walk The Corso to Manly Beach. If you’re up for more walking, the Shelly Beach track (1.5km round trip from Manly) is a short scenic add-on. The Boathouse Shelly Beach for a late lunch.
Evening — Newtown
Train from Circular Quay to Newtown. King Street’s food scene is Sydney’s most diverse. Mary’s for a no-frills burger and loud music. Black Star Pastry for the cult strawberry watermelon cake. Wander the backstreets for street art.
Day 3: Blue Mountains Day Trip
Book a full-day Blue Mountains tour. Klook and GetYourGuide both run 7am–6pm tours that hit the Three Sisters, Scenic World, and Featherdale Wildlife Park. Price: AU$99–149 depending on group size and inclusions.
If you’d rather stay in the city, substitute with:
- Taronga Zoo (ferry from Circular Quay, half-day)
- Bronte to Bondi (reverse direction of the walk, quieter)
- Paddington + Surry Hills — boutique shopping on Oxford Street, cafe-hopping on Crown Street
Evening — Airport transfer
Same options as arrival. Leave at least 2 hours before an international flight, 1.5 hours for domestic. The T8 airport train runs every 10 minutes until midnight.
Melbourne: 72-Hour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival + Laneways
Morning — Arrive at MEL
Melbourne Airport is 23km from the CBD. The SkyBus is the default choice — AU$23.90 one-way, AU$36 return, runs every 10 minutes, drops you at Southern Cross Station in 22–30 minutes. Uber is AU$50–65.
If you booked on points: the Grand Hyatt Melbourne (Category 4, 15,000–18,000 Hyatt points) on Collins Street is the best points-value luxury option in the city. For Marriott: W Melbourne (50,000–70,000 points) in the CBD. For budget: Ovolo Laneways or any of the dozen IHG properties near Southern Cross.
Afternoon — Laneways and Coffee
Melbourne’s coffee culture is legendary, and you experience it in the laneways. Start with a flat white at Patricia Coffee Brewers (Little Bourke Street — standing room only, no wifi, some of the best coffee in the city). Then walk the classic laneway circuit:
- Hosier Lane: Melbourne’s most famous street art lane. Changes constantly. Photograph it, but don’t expect to see the same walls when you return next year
- Degraves Street: European-style pedestrian lane with cafes spilling onto the cobblestones
- Centre Place: Narrower, grittier, more interesting than Degraves. Great for people-watching
Evening — Chinatown or Fitzroy
Melbourne’s Chinatown on Little Bourke Street is the oldest continuous Chinatown in the Southern Hemisphere. HuTong Dumpling Bar for xiao long bao. Sichuan House if you want serious heat.
Alternatively, take a tram to Fitzroy (tram 86 from Bourke Street). Brunswick Street and Smith Street are Melbourne’s counterculture heartland. Naked for Satan (rooftop bar, AU$12–15 cocktails). Marion (wine bar, excellent small plates).
Day 2: Culture + Markets
Morning — NGV and Arts Precinct
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International on St Kilda Road, free entry for the permanent collection) has one of the best art collections in the country. Even if you’re not a gallery person, the Great Hall’s stained-glass ceiling is worth seeing.
Afternoon — Queen Victoria Market
The Queen Vic Market (Tues–Sun) has been operating since 1878. The deli hall has the best variety — fresh pasta, cheese, smallgoods, dolmades. Grab lunch from the food stalls (Bratwurst Shop is the classic; Borek at the food court for something different).
Alternative rainy-day plan: Melbourne Museum (Carlton Gardens, AU$15) or the State Library of Victoria (free, the La Trobe Reading Room dome is the Instagram shot you’ve seen).
Evening — Southbank
Walk the Yarra River from Flinders Street Station to Southbank. Crown Casino’s fire towers (hourly after dark) are cheesy but entertaining. Dinner at Supernormal (Flinders Lane, modern Asian, AU$50–70pp) or Chin Chin (around the corner, always busy, no bookings, go early).
Day 3: Great Ocean Road or City Alternative
Full-day option — Great Ocean Road
12+ hour tour, 7am–8pm. Hits the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, and a koala-spotting stop. Book via Klook or GetYourGuide. AU$110–150 per person. The tour is long and involves a lot of coach time, but the Apostles at sunset justify the trip.
Half-day option — Mornington Peninsula
If 12 hours is too much, wine-tasting on the Mornington Peninsula is a more relaxed alternative. Book a half-day wine tour on GetYourGuide or Viator (AU$120–160). You’ll visit 3–4 cellar doors with lunch included. Return to the city by 3pm.
City alternative — St Kilda
Skip the tour entirely and spend the day at St Kilda. Tram 96 from Bourke Street (~25 min). Walk the St Kilda Pier to see the little penguin colony (they come in at dusk — free to watch). Acland Street for cake at Monarch Cakes (their chocolate kugelhupf has been on the menu since 1934). Luna Park’s entrance mouth is the photo-op.
Evening — Airport transfer
SkyBus return from Southern Cross Station. Allow 2 hours before international, 1.5 hours for domestic.
