Velocity Transfer Partners 2026 Mid-Year Check: New Additions & Changes

TL;DR – May 2026: Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer has seen several mid-cycle transfer partner evolutions that matter deeply to Australian points collectors. The headline moves: IHG One Rewards halved its conversion ratio to 5:1, making hotel-to-Velocity transfers suddenly relevant; a brand-new Accor Live Limitless partnership started at a solid 2:1; Macquarie Bank entered the credit card transfer space at a lukewarm 3:1; however CommBank Awards slid from 2:1 to 2.5:1 in March, trimming value by 20%. The American Express Membership Rewards → Velocity pipeline remains the gold standard for flexibility, while the Velocity → KrisFlyer conduit still unlocks unparalleled Star Alliance redemptions—though direct Virgin Australia partner awards often undercut the conversion maths. If you’re SYD or MEL based, the sweet spot hasn’t moved: earn on the ground with Amex, redeem for international business class directly via Velocity’s partner chart, and only lean on hotel transfers when you’re topping up a few thousand points. The ecosystem scores a strong 8/10, losing a point only because several bank ratios now lag and transfer times can stretch beyond the weekend.

The State of Play: Velocity Transfer Partners in 2026

Australian frequent flyers occupy a unique space globally: no domestic legacy carrier points currency flows as freely as Velocity. Where Qantas Frequent Flyer tightly guards its own garden, Velocity has spent a decade building bridges. By mid-2026, you can funnel points from ten major credit card programs, four hotel groups, two fuel and supermarket programs, and then—if you choose—pump them through the Velocity → KrisFlyer pipe into the Star Alliance. This labyrinth is both Velocity’s greatest gift and its greatest complexity.

The 2026 mid-year check is especially important because the first five months have delivered more structural changes than all of 2025. IHG recalibrated its decade-old ratio; Accor finally joined after years of speculation; CommBank and Macquarie moved in opposite directions. For the prudent points accumulator, ignoring these shifts means leaking value. The analysis that follows is built for the SYD/MEL-centric Australian flyer, assumes you hold at least one flexible-points credit card, and judges every ratio against the central question: how many cents of premium travel does one Velocity point buy?

Before we dive into the partner-by-partner countdown, a quick orientation. Velocity points themselves can be redeemed in three primary ways:

  1. Virgin Australia-operated flights – now fully dynamic, pricing closely tracks paid fares and rarely delivers outsized value unless you catch a controller-error fare.
  2. Partner airline award charts – still fixed (zones, cabins, dates subject to availability). This includes Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Etihad, ANA, United, and others. These charts are the heart of aspirational redemptions.
  3. Velocity → KrisFlyer transfers – 1.55 Velocity = 1 KrisFlyer mile, opening Singapore Airlines’ own Saver and Advantage awards plus the entire Star Alliance.

I’ll reference these redemption outlets as we benchmark each transfer partner’s real-world output.

Credit Card Transfer Partners

Credit cards remain the engine room of Velocity accumulation. Not all earn rates are transparent because they sit behind a two-step process: card spending → bank rewards points → Velocity transfer. The current landscape, incorporating the CommBank devaluation and Macquarie’s debut, is summarised below:

A quick profitability audit for the two largest Melbourne/Sydney-based spending profiles:

Profile A – Strongest earn
Use the American Express Platinum Edge card (3 MR/$1 at supermarkets and petrol stations). Converting 3 MR to Velocity at 2:1 yields 1.5 Velocity points per dollar. To reach a one-way business class award to Southeast Asia (55,000 Velocity points on Singapore Airlines), you’d need ~$36,667 in grocery/petrol spend – entirely achievable in a year for a two-person household. At a conservative valuation of 2.5 cents per point, that’s a 3.75% effective return on spend.

Profile B – Fee-free fallback
ANZ Rewards Platinum (no annual fee in first year, then $95) delivers 2 ANZ/$1 on all spend. That’s an unwavering 1 Velocity point per $1. For the same 55,000 Velocity points, you’d spend $55,000 – still a 2.5% return. The recent 2:1 ratio stability here contrasts starkly with CommBank’s slide, making ANZ the standout mid-range option.

When to transfer, not hoard

A recurring trap: Australians hoard bank points. If your program uses a floating ratio (NAB, Westpac, ANZ), a devaluation hurts only future earnings, not already-accrued points. CommBank’s move to 2.5:1 is a case in point – awards balances converted pre-March 2026 retained the old 2:1 rate. The lesson: transfer to Velocity as soon as you have enough for a specific redemption, unless your bank program offers a transfer bonus window. NAB’s periodic 1.5:1 promotions (we’ve seen two already in 2026) are the exception; there, patience is rewarded.

Hotel Transfer Partners

Hotel points have historically been a poor pathway to Velocity, but 2026 flipped that script.

IHG’s shift from 10:1 to 5:1 is modest in absolute terms – 10,000 IHG points still yield only 2,000 Velocity points – but it moves the ratio from “never consider” to “useful for that last 2,000 points you need for a booking.” A Sydney-based member with 40,000 IHG points leftover from a cancelled hotel stay can now turn them into 8,000 Velocity points, enough to cover the taxes on a partner award or push a balance over the line.

The real newcomer is Accor Live Limitless. Historically, ALL points are near-cash: 2,000 ALL points = €40 off an Accor hotel bill, a fixed 2 euro cents per point. The 2:1 Velocity conversion is financially neutral at first glance – 2,000 ALL → 1,000 Velocity points, which in a well-executed business class redemption can be worth $25 AUD (2.5 cpp). That’s equivalent to €15, below the €40 hotel floor. However, if you’ve accumulated ALL points primarily from paid stays and have no upcoming Accor bookings, the transfer prevents asset decay. My advice: don’t manufacture ALL points for Velocity; only transfer those you genuinely won’t use for hotel stays within 12 months.

Marriott Bonvoy remains the only hotel program where a transfer can target a specific large redemption without tears. The 60,000 → 25,000 Velocity block transfer (effective 2.4:1) is workable for someone with a fat Bonvoy balance and a clear airline target. But note the opportunity cost: 60,000 Bonvoy points also book a Category 6 peak-night hotel stay worth $500+, whereas 25,000 Velocity points equate to roughly $625 in business class but carry restricted availability. If you can reliably find a lie-flat seat, it’s a slight win; otherwise, the hotel stay is the lower-risk option.
